Healthy Eating
I'm certainly not pointing out anything new by saying that it is very difficult to maintain a healthy diet when eating away from home. But it occurred to me this afternoon, while I was picking up my lunch from Subway, that it's dramatically easier than it used to be.
As an example, here are several food items that are now routinely available at fast food restaurants that were nearly impossible to get 20, 15, or even 10 years ago:
- Salads
- Fresh fruit
- Milk
- Real fruit juice
- Bottled Water **
Also, many restaurants and makers of pre-packaged foods are starting to move away from trans fats.
Granted, we still have quite a way to go. Most restaurant meals are still loaded in fat and excess calories. Still, it's truly good that things are getting better, and that market forces have helped us get there.
** Yes, I know that tap water is just as healthy and has always been available. However, many people simply won't drink the stuff but have no problems with bottled water, so having it available is unquestionably a health boon for the nation.
Hey Russell,
Great blog entry! This is a very helpful reminder to me. I try to be aware of the importance of good nutrition all the time, but it's very useful to keep in mind the nature of the challenges we face.
Thankfully, it is getting easier to make good choices in food because more of the healthy foods are available in more places. Excellent blogging as usual, my friend! I think this topic is so important, I've linked to this post from my blog. It's great stuff. Keep up the good work.
